he/her)

Avnika is a grad student in the MB&B department who hails from Ohio, the beautiful land of endless cornfields. Aside from holing up in the lab, she can be found at home experimenting with food recipes, finding internet memes, or crushing a HIIT workout. Avnika loves good music and good puns, which often fall flat and get her into major treble.

Becca is a BBS student from New York, which is to say, she has strong opinions on bagels. When she’s not in lab pretending to be a wizard at Hogwarts, she can be found drinking too much coffee, reading, or practicing martial arts. Not necessarily in that order (except the coffee).

Dalton is a PHD student in the geology department studying paleontology. Meaning he has both the dream job and wardrobe of a first grader. Hailing from the alpine wonderland of Colorado, he is still trying to figure out the best local beer. Otherwise, he can be found looking for new board games to try and listening to too many podcasts.

Elizabeth Woo
School of Medicine
Member since Fall 2021

Elizabeth is a proud Midwesterner (from a suburb of Chicago) and a 7th year MD/PhD student studying how we can prevent neurodegeneration. When she is not on the lab struggle bus, she loves learning languages, secretly (not so secretly) loves practicing different accents, singing (anywhere/everywhere), and looking for the best dessert places.

Emily received her MFA from the School of Drama in May of 2020 and is now back researching a dissertation on ecological art and performance…but spends most of her time frolicking in the woods, working as an environmental educator, climbing, and singing.

Jiwon Yun
Sociology
Member since Fall 2020
(he/him)

Jiwon is a PhD student in the Department of Sociology. He was born in South Korea, but grew up in Sri Lanka where he attended a British school, which means that he is quite a disoriented soul. Starting his program on Zoom did not help much with his already poor coordination. Perhaps, this is why he is very familiar with Yale’s Lockout Assistance. Other than music, Jiwon is very passionate about languages and travel, and hopes to visit at least 25 states before he finishes his degree (13 + DC and counting!).

Jonas is a 4th-year PhD student in the Applied Math Program who hails from the West Coast, USA. (Don't ask him exactly where or you'll have to sit through his entire life story.) Relatedly, he doesn't understand why New Englanders would sacrifice having a liveable summer and winter for having four seasons. When not writing endless amounts of tedious numerical code and mathematical proofs, he spends his free time listening to and writing music, hiking, uploading and curating iNaturalist observations, trying different foods, watching memes and educational content on YouTube, and engaging in discourse on random topics with friends and foes on the internet.

He still has no idea why most of these bios are written in third-person...

June is a burning flame shelled with a poker face. Yes that means she plays good poker but not often and she often attempts to dance and Karaoke unabashedly but not super professionally. Her great plan to save her body from getting lumbar disc and psychasthenia is playing badminton and getting outdoors when she is not Latexing.

Kathryn is a sixth-year student in the BBS PhD program. She's a dog enthusiast, samurai jack fanatic and steminist. When she hasn't locked herself in lab, you can find her trying to convince people to watch Swiss Army Man (seriously, watch it), and scouting for free food and coffee.

Living up to the Filipino stereotype, Kevin loves to sing and karaoke - in the lab, at his favorite Gryphon's pub, or with the Yale Citations, no place is safe. Aside from singing and being in the lab, Kevin also enjoys playing tennis, eating as much food as his stipend allows, or simply just sleeping for hours relaxing at home.

Sam Shipman
Earth and Planetary Sciences

Sam is a Ph.D. student in Earth and Planetary Sciences studying geochemistry. Originally from northern California, Sam still does not understand the meaning of the word “turnpike” and is thoroughly confused by the extra cold rain that falls during winter. When he’s not in the lab, Sam enjoys hiking/camping, both good and bad movies, and drinking coffee at all hours of the day. He should probably get more sleep.

Savannah Olroyd
Department of Earth and Planetary Science

Savannah is a postdoctoral researcher studying paleontology. She is from Portland, Oregon and has never seen the sun. Savannah is an avid crafter and a hopeless nerd, which leads to an obscene amount of handmade Pokemon plushies and 3D printed DnD miniatures. Sometimes she even finishes them. She can be summoned by talking about rabbits.
